There are any number of technologies which hit the IT world by storm and at that point in time it seems, it would start ruling the world in no time. Then it passes over and it does not take long to be forgotten. Metaverse turned out to be one such technology that was getting unfolded to finally vanish into the blue. Lots of technologies have remained in vogue with very little penetration and barely any large-scale impact. I find the same fate of blockchain technology, compared to the transformative level that it was envisioned. It was slated to become an all-pervasive technology in no time, but that did not happen.
In the AI age Agentic AI holds a totally transformational promise, if executed across board might do wonders in the manner it is made out to be. There are many slips between the cup and the lips as these are not simple technologies, and it would need a humongous effort both tech and non-tech to make it happen. A recent Gartner report bares it all. The headline blares, “More than 40% Agentic AI projects will be cancelled by 2027, which are likely to happen due to growing costs, elusive business value and insufficient security.
While we feel that it is all hunky dory with the Agentic AI initiatives and enterprises after enterprises would be going the Agentic AI way sooner than later, the report is a solid dampener to our make-believe world. The Gartner study revealed that 19% of the organisations had made significant investments in Agentic AI, 42% had made conservative investments, while the remaining 31% were taking a wait and see approach. The general feeling of the people following Agentic AI is that it would have made considerable progress given its hype for quite some time now.
” Most agentic AI projects right now are early-stage experiments or proofs of concept that are mostly driven by hype and are often misplaced,” said Anushree Verma of Gartner. What is necessary today is to cut through the hype to make careful, strategic decisions about where and how they would apply this emerging technology. Most vendors are into “agent washing,” which means to market AI assistants or robotic process automation (RPA) tools and chatbots as AI agents. Only around 130 of the thousands of Agentic AI vendors were of substance. Nonetheless, agentic AI offers a large scope in advancement of AI capabilities. It is projected that by 2028, 33% of enterprise software applications will include agentic AI.
TIME TO TAKE AGENTIC AI SERIOUSLY FOR THE RESULTS IT CAN DELIVER.
