Revolutionary technologies have reached mankind through iconic products which have defined human existence and also its future trajectory. It has been rare, if any, that a product even before the design stage has been proclaimed to be the product of the future, which would totally subsume the world in itself. This is what the demigods of GPT / conversational AI and design intend to make. This is the vision that brings Sam Altman and Jony Ive together. They are calling from the rooftops that it would be the vehicle of AI in the days to come.
The latest is that Ive and Altman announced that, io, was purchased by OpenAI very recently. Both have also just announced that an AI device made by their company, io, is underway. Little over two days have passed since the contours of this mysterious product was not even in the realm of speculation. But it is now being rumoured that it would look like an iPod shuffle. It is happening for the first time in the history of tech product development that there has been so much hype created at the ideation level itself. Understandably, there is expectation too.
The renowned leaker as he is famed, Ming-Chi-Kuo, the current OpenAI ChatGPT hardware prototype “is slightly larger than the AI Pin, with a form factor as compact and elegant as an iPod shuffle.” Even more than this information, what is revealing from the disruption point of view is that io’s product is expected to enter mass production at the start of 2027. The device is expected to have cameras and microphones, wearable around the neck and is also expected to connect to smartphones and PCs, utilizing their computing and display capabilities.
Suffice to say that in the announcement video, Ive, famous for designing the first iPhone, talked for nine minutes without divulging any information about what the product is, other than that it’s “an extraordinary moment.” Essentially it’s going to be a better version of the Humane AI pin. It would be ChatGPT in a small product, which can be put in a pocket or worn around your neck. But there is still time before the first product enters mass production, it could mean major changes over the next one year. “AI integrated into real-world applications, often termed “physical AI,” is widely recognized as the next critical trend.” Though we don’t know the necessity of such products today yet in just around two years all of us would be interacting with ChatGPT and other AI models in totally new ways.
