CYBER SECURITY’S AI RIGMAROLE

The way AI is transforming our lives and world is not hidden to anybody, and possibly it can’t, given the tectonic changes it is making day in and day out. The launch of ChatGPT on 30th of Nov. 2022 has been a watershed moment in the history of this technology and of the world. What came out of the tech research closet that day has by now become a tech tsunami, which no one can stop. The best way is to go with it and use it to our advantage and for the purpose we are desirous of. That too is turning out to be a challenge. The governance of it, the less said the better.

What is most concerning is the age old challenge which we face with every technology? That is can be used for good and for the bad. The same issues have erupted with the unleashing of AI at scale. This is to say that it adds a challenge to cyber security, where generative AI is already making waves. The release of ChatGPT has led to a 4151% increase in phishing attacks. Phishing attacks have become more advanced being AI driven. Social engineering will reach newer levels with AI. Cyber criminals will increasingly use AI to execute highly targeted phishing campaigns, develop polymorphic malware that can evade detection and create deep fake fraud schemes.

AI is making its deep impact felt in exploiting supply chain vulnerabilities, ransomware evolution and nation state cyber attacks amongst many. The moot question is what the same technology can help in fighting this menace? AI and Machine Learning can play a crucial role in predictive cyber defense by leveraging advanced algorithms to anticipate and mitigate cyber threats before they cause harm. Proactive Anomaly Detection can be an area propelled by AI. AI algorithms can analyse vast datasets of network traffic, user behaviour and system logs to identify subtle deviations indicative of malicious activity.

In the cyber security realm, other areas where AI can be a boon is predictive threat intelligence. By analysing historical data, threat intelligence fields, and emerging attack patterns, AI can predict future attacks and proactively implement preventive measures. Enhanced Phishing Detection is another area to benefit. Advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP) allows AI to analyse the context and intent in communications, significantly improving phishing detection accuracy and preventing social engineering attacks. Other areas where AI can make a market difference is in Real-Time Threat Identification and Automated Response and in Automated Recovery Protocols.

AI CAN IMPROVE THE CYBER SECURITY OF THE WORLD CONSIDERABLY.
