Public domain is generally thought to be synonymous to public life and the variants we are comfortable with is political life, social and civil activism, religious and spiritual gurus; who hog the maximum public space and thus rule over the hearts and minds of people. The electronic and the social media works full time to make it happen. There doesn’t seem to be a scope for a parallel public discourse nor are professionals ready to take that plunge.
Public domain is too big a world; the custodians cannot be the fixed ones . In a global village, where every word we write can have an instant global audience; the people in the public domain do not reflect this reality. Life is more knowledge based today and nature of awareness mandatorily required to live our lives is changing by the day; professionals from different fields can contribute in the public domain to society’s benefit. Who doesn’t want to be known and who doesn’t want that his knowledge to reach a wider audience?
This is the new public domain which is on offer in the country now. They are hardly any takers. The takers would have first mover advantage and county is yearning to make them public heroes. Lots of bestselling authors from specialised fields writing in public domain have become celebrities moulding people’s thoughts positively. Think of a few top notch doctors making the country aware of the major health issues, organ transplantation, the corporatisation of medical services et al. Well founded professional knowledge is the only way to create a well informed democratic society.
More professionals imparting relevant knowledge in the public domain, will provide an inbuilt reliability to the knowledge repository available and being used in the public domain. This can make us withstand against lots of the ills of the day.
