MEDICAL SUPERINTELLIGENCE

While it has become fanciful to talk about Superintelligence in the age of AI, What does it mean and whether we are actually moving in that direction or not? This is a trillion dollar question and it will take some time to be sorted out. Beyond getting into too many technicalities what it generally means is intellectual power beyond humans. Currently for whatever reasons the talk in AI public domain is just around Superintelligence and no Artificial Superintelligence.

The baseline would be that this form of intelligence of the machine would not just match but greatly exceed the cognitive abilities of the most brilliant human minds. This is not a sequential linear growth of AI, AGI AND ASI which has been talking the copybook AI style. In simple terms it is beating the best of professionals as it stands today. The current thought is whether we are on the path to medical superintelligence. In a recent article “The Path to Medical Superintelligence” by Dominic King and Harsha Nori.

In it, the Microsoft AI team shares research that demonstrates how Artificial Intelligence has gained, though nascent, to sequentially investigate and solve medicine’s most complex diagnostic challenges. These are the cases that the expert physicians struggle to answer. It has been benchmarked against real-world case records. Where did these case records come from? These case records are the ones published every week in the New England Journal of Medicine. The findings are startling. The machine against experienced physicians.

The tool in question, the Microsoft AI Diagnostic Orchestrator (MAI-DxO) correctly diagnoses up to 85% of NEJM cases, a rate more than four times higher than a group of experienced physicians. There is another very interesting facet to this research. MAI-DxO also gets the correct diagnosis more cost effectively than the physicians. Baseline benchmarking is only one and might be the smaller part of this exercise. The Microsoft AI Diagnostic Orchestrator (MAI-DxO), is “a system designed to emulate a virtual panel of physicians” with diverse diagnostic approaches collaborating to solve diagnostic cases. MAI-DxO boosted the diagnostic performance of every tool it was tested upon.

MEDICAL SUPERINTELLIGENCE WILL OPEN UP A BRAVE NEW MEDICAL ECOSYSTEM; FAR MORE PRODUCTIVE THAN THE CURRENT ONE.
