6G – BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE IS ALREADY HEATING UP

While India is still parched for 5G, with a DOT press release announcing that 5G would be available in 13 cities across the country in 2022. 5G has been the buzzword for quite some time but still very few in the country would be able to cite its most conspicuous benefits or  what is the likely roadmap. The road necessarily has to be our capability in terms of technical expertise, availability of technology, costing, logistics and the timelines. It is still uncertain as to how long it will take for 5G to happen for a large part of the population, to reap benefits from it. Nobody wants to know how China took the lead in this technology, as that could help us plan the trajectory of our research in this area. China has already started going great guns with 6G.

Research is a long-term game where perseverance is the key. Every subsequent stage is built on the strength of the earlier one. Have we been anywhere in the 5G research roadmap? Now China makes a startling announcement. It claims that it has set a new ”World Record” in data streaming using next gen wireless communication. It has been claimed to be 100 times faster. Researchers working on 6G technology have made this landmark claim. They claim to have made this record using a novel technology, which would for sure help China to gain a distinct competitive edge for the next generation wireless communication.

South China Morning Post reported that the researchers sent 1 terabyte of data over 1 km (3,300 feet) in a second.  Vortex is a type of extremely high-frequency radio wave with rapidly changing spins. China is leading the 6G charge, with 40.3% of patents in this technology. Another startling claim related to the same breakthrough has been that they demonstrated a hypersonic weapon could communicate and locate targets using 6G technology. If this feat has been achieved, it would help in overcoming the blackout issues that occur at speeds of five times the sound of speed or faster. ”Hypersonic weapons face difficulties maintaining communication due to the hot, ionized gas, that appears on their surface, which blocks electromagnetic waves during supersonic flights.”

Experimental lines in the Winter Olympics compound could stream 10,000 HD live video feeds simultaneously. A physical dimension is added on it, which can open a world of unlimited possibilities. The ‘W’ band, a radio frequency used for military applications has been used in this experiment.  In 2018, they built a 172 kms vortex wave link between a plane and ground station, which is still a world record. Moving from a 2D wave, like a tornado, the vortex electromagnetic wave has a three-dimensional form. ”To substantially expand the bandwidth of transmission, extra information may be coded into the spinning, or orbital angular momentum (OAM), of these waves. This has a promise of revolutionary times ahead.

TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH IS PRIMORDIAL TO OUR PROSPECTS OF EXPONENTIAL GROWTH.
