THE DECADENT PROFESSIONAL

The decadent professional is directly proportional to the quality of delivery and whatever little incremental value is added to it, is because of ingestion of technology, capital, improved communication or some generic process improvement, having all across the industry and governance. He takes credit of even the minimal improvements. He is mostly in a defence mode trying to prove that he is worthwhile, be evasive wherever he can, and if directly hit on the face, he comes up with some lame duck excuse, till the time he faces the situation, yet again.

Decadent primarily means characterized by decay or decline. If at times we have to stretch it further, it is as in being self-indulgent or morally corrupt. Look at the quality of professionals all around you and you will find how this description sticks on to a large number of them. A professional is a person who does not need instructions and step by step monitoring and be cajoled to perform, he is one who understands the problem statement or the job description and has the capability to deliver on his own. He is not an apprentice, which most of the professionals have turned out to be.

The next trait of the professional is he will himself announce the successful completion of his work and would open himself to full scrutiny and be fully accountable for his delivery. Just take the simplest of engineering tasks in Bangalore, roads without potholes, or if potholes somehow happens, to do away with it, technically and for a long period of time. How decadent are the professionals handling it? Simple engineering issue. The energized professional is an antidote to the decadent professional. Energy first means a clean slate, which means you are not carrying any non-professional baggage.

Energy corelates to being proactive, deeply enmeshed in expertise, with demonstrated capability of the professional known all throughout public domain or at least in his domain. What percentage of professionals do we find in this mould? Our governance professionals always look for a nod even for the minutest of things, which have already well laid rules and norms and they are provided with immunity of a kind sufficient enough to create governance wonders. How about our software professionals, who brought us to the managed services avatar or even less? Are we fit only to work due to price / wage differential? This was the creation of the decadent tech professional. Satyam, IL&FS, currently TCS, BharatPe and many more, are audited by companies supposedly of repute, and they end up unfortunately, where they do. The checklist / tick mark industry flourishes, which is the ultimate hallmark of this decadence. In this case the client and vendor are both are neck deep in decadence.

THE DECADENT PROFESSIONAL SEES THE WORLD THROUGH THE PRISM OF A JOB THAT FENDS FOR HIM. IT’S LIKE A DOLE.
