GRU – CAUGHT REDHANDED
The series of successful hacks globally had for sure emboldened the Russian Intelligence Unit GRU. They were moving into global pre-eminence in the hacking arena but were able to cover their tracks pretty well. This Unit has been the home to Russia military’s best mathematical minds and has been the brain behind the hacking campaign to influence the American 2016 elections. This rock solid reputation hit its nadir when GRU spies where caught by the Dutch authorities, after bungling their mission from Kremlin, to hack Organisation of Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, OPCW, in the Dutch city.
The foiled attempt was made public by the Dutch authorities yesterday leading to global condemnation of Russia. Technology is double edged is amply demonstrated by every single use of hacking and equally potent use for its investigation, the Silk Road investigation is also a case in point. The trial of evidence has pieced together by the Dutch is simply devastating. It is able to give scene by scene evidence of how GRU Military Intelligence Service operated under the name Sandworm. ”They attempted to use a rig of computers, antennae and phones hidden in the boot of a hidden car to gain access to the organisations IT systems.”
To provide a failsafe evidence to the world, the Dutch authorities produced the whole dossier of evidence to prove how the Russian spies were trying a launch a “close access” from a street in The Hague. This happened in April this year, more than a month after the Salisbury attack while OPCW was investigating the use of novichok, a military grade nerve agent. This was alleged to be used for the poisoning of Sergei Skripal, a double agent and his daughter Yulia on March 4.
