Travis Kalanick’s new company, Atoms, wants to ride this wave with a universal wheeled “robot base” that can be adapted into many specialized machines for food service, logistics, and mining. Instead of chasing humanoids, Atoms is betting that wheels beat legs because most high‑value work happens on flat, predictable surfaces like warehouses and industrial sites. With CloudKitchens and related assets folded into Atoms, it already has real‑world environments where these robots can be deployed, tested, and scaled.
Is this the next big step after LLMs and agentic AI? Very likely yes—because once AI agents can sense and act in the physical world through robots. Kalanick’s Uber track record shows he can scale fast, but regulation, worker pushback, safety, and cross‑industry complexity will decide whether Atoms becomes another Uber or another overhyped bet.
The idea of a standard “wheelbase for robots” makes robotics more like smartphones and apps: a common base, endless specializations, and continuous software upgrades that quietly make the physical world smarter and more automated every year.
