THE SCARE OF AI

The age of scare has hit the IT world straddled between the hackers on the one side and the super emergence of Artificial Intelligence. AI in its more five decades of history has seen couple of AI Winters and AI Inflection Points.  The Inflection Points descended into Winters as it didn’t deliver any worthwhile transformational results.  Might be we are in for the first real Inflection Point.

Vastly improved capabilities in storage, computational power, big data and machine learning is propelling AI as never before.  AI is a reality today with Siri, Cortana and endless backend applications in many sectors from retail to Facebook. From the robots and AI assistants it can move to become the Super AI mastering to become overlords of human being.  The voyager of the tech world, Elon Musk, has developed a cold feet.  He has declared a open war on AI, to save humanity from  machine – learning overlords.  How it unfolds would be a real fascinating story.

As the story goes Hassabis, a co-founder of the mysterious London laboratory DeepMind, later acquired by Google, was discussing super artificial intelligence and its benefits.   Elon Musk replied that it’s for this reason he is doing R & D on interplanetary colonization.  Pat came the reply, super AI would simply follow the humans to Mars. However much imaginary it may be, what AI can ultimately do is a discussion hitting the center stage.

Musk is convinced that without oversight Artificial Intelligence can pose existential threat to mankind. He says  We are summoning the demon.”  His doomsday warning dates to three years back, predicting that AI will run amok. One Hassabis’s DeepMind partners Shane Legg, minced no words,  “I think human extinction will probably occur, and technology will likely play a part in this.”

Whatever might be the eventual fate of AI, it has for sure, become suspect. Even with the best of human intentions, an accident might transform the  ultimate miracle into a destroyer genie.

AI IS THE FIRST TECHNOLOGY TO SCARE HUMANS.
