The U.S. Department of Energy has launched the Genesis Mission, a major new effort to merge artificial intelligence with national scientific research. Backed by 24 tech giants — including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, xAI, and Nvidia — the program unites 17 national labs and 40,000 scientists to fast-track breakthroughs in nuclear energy, quantum computing, materials science, and biomedicine.

With AWS pledging up to $50 billion in AI infrastructure and DeepMind offering tools like AlphaEvolve and AlphaGenome, researchers will use next-gen supercomputers such as Los Alamos’ Venado to simulate, test, and build faster than ever before.
Running through the end of the decade, Genesis hopes to deliver practical outcomes — smarter climate models, breakthroughs in clean energy, and new scientific materials — all powered by AI-driven research. It also marks the rise of machine “co-scientists” working side by side with humans to accelerate innovation.
