OpenAI is reportedly developing its first home device — a small, donut-shaped speaker without a screen. It may cost between $300 and $400 and could arrive in 2027. The device is expected to bring ChatGPT into homes in a completely new way. It could become a constant AI companion for the entire family.
Unlike ordinary smart speakers, this gadget may have cameras, microphones and other sensors. A light would indicate when it is listening. It could understand conversations, remember context and respond more naturally to people at home. This means users may not have to repeat the same instructions every time.
This could be the beginning of a new market for AI gadgets. Instead of only answering questions, such devices may eventually help manage schedules, control home appliances, assist children with learning and support elderly or disabled users.
But OpenAI will face strong competition from Amazon and Apple, which are also developing smart-home products. Privacy, safety, price and public trust will decide whether people accept AI devices that can see, hear and remember. The success of these products will depend on how safely and transparently they handle people’s personal lives.
