Apple has raised prices on many Macs and iPads by $100–$200 or more, blaming a dramatic rise in memory and storage chip costs driven by the booming AI infrastructure market. CEO Tim Cook says he has never seen anything like it in over 40 years. The move sent Apple shares lower and signals that the chip crunch is starting to bite everyday gadgets.
The unusual spike in DRAM and flash chip demand comes from data centers and AI companies building massive compute farms. When cloud providers and AI firms buy huge amounts of memory, less is left for laptop and tablet makers, who then pass the higher costs to consumers. Other PC brands have already warned of price increases or shrinking entry-level models.
For now phones, watches, and earbuds are largely spared, but more price rises could follow if the memory shortage continues. That means buying a new laptop or tablet might cost more, and basic, cheap models could become harder to find. AI-powered services may also become costlier over time as providers face higher infrastructure bills.
Analysts say DRAM prices surged nearly 100% in early 2026 and could climb further, so relief may not come quickly. Manufacturers and chip makers are racing to expand supply, but scaling fabs takes time and investment. Please keep an eye on used/refurbished markets, compare models, and delay upgrades if possible.
THE AI-DRAM CRUNCH COULD MAKE COMPUTE A NEW LUXURY.
