The price drops stem from genuine efficiency gains, not just strategy. OpenAI’s flagship Sol model autonomously rewrote its own GPU code, cutting serving costs by 20% and boosting token-generation efficiency by over 15%. These self-optimizations allowed OpenAI to pass savings directly to users without sacrificing performance.
GPT-5.6 Luna now costs just $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 for output — an 80% drop. The mid-tier Terra model is 20% cheaper at $2 input and $12 output per million tokens. Sol’s pricing stays at $5/$30, but a new “Fast mode” offers 2.5x speed at double the cost for premium needs.
