Meta added cameras to its smart glasses so users could take photos, record videos, make calls and use AI to understand the world around them. This made the glasses more useful than ordinary eyewear. The camera was central to Meta’s plan to make smart glasses a practical, hands-free device.
But the camera also created a privacy problem. People nearby could be recorded without knowing it, leading to fears of secret filming, harassment and misuse of videos. The glasses’ recording light has also faced criticism for not always being easy to notice. These concerns have damaged public trust in camera-equipped smart glasses.
Meta is reportedly developing a new model, codenamed Luna, without a camera. It may have six microphones, built-in speakers and access to Meta AI and Muse. Users could ask questions and receive spoken answers through the glasses. A side button is also expected to give users quick access to the AI assistant.
Luna could make smart glasses more acceptable in public. But microphones can also raise privacy concerns if they capture nearby conversations. The product’s success will depend on whether people find voice-based AI useful enough to wear every day. Meta must show that removing the camera can improve trust without removing the product’s appeal.
