ETOS SE FACES RANSOMWARE ATTACK

Getting hacked in the new normal, is a truism that has gained ground in recent years. As the world moved to a totally digital mode, courtesy the Covid push, forcing people to embrace technology, primarily with no other workable choice left. The total digital transformation led to various unwanted changes in the cyber ecosystem. Cyber security became an issue which now left no one untouched. It was imperative to deal with it at all levels from individuals to central banks to the nations, under fire themselves. The threat actors came in various shapes, sizes and dimensions and also with radically different motives.

Ransomware attacks are the prima donna crime of the cyber world today. One is forced to accept de facto reality that data is the new oil, and you cannot afford to lose it in whatsoever form. Data ownership is a valuable form of ownership in today’s world for sure. The lucrative criminal business of ransomware attacks is planned and executed by ransomware gangs. They also end up playing various tricks to gain supremacy and amass ransom as any other criminal trade. Taking responsibility for a ransomware attack has become a standard pattern now. A small sample data and few details thereof generally shows up on DarkNet sites as well.

Ransomware attacks keep happening at an alarming frequency. We rarely hear of IT behemoths falling to this crime, at least it does not appear in the public domain. Most recent headline in this regard is, “Ransomware attack exposes database of one of France’s biggest IT companies with over 100,000 employees.” The company in question in Atos SE, is facing claims of a ransomware attack by the Space Bears group. They have claimed database compromise. Ironically, the French tech company specialises in cybersecurity, cloud computing and digital transformation. It is investigating the case but has not found any evidence of breach so far.

Atos is one of the biggest IT companies in France. The company said that it is taking these claims made by the cybercrime group seriously. Though no breach has been found so far, the company’s cyber security team is actively investigating the situation. “Atos has also promised to share the updates publicly if the situation changes. Space Bears group made this claim on Dec 28, 2024. Strangely, no ransom demand has been made to date. Space Bears ransomware group surfaced in early 2024. They have already launched attacks on multiple victims inclusive of Canadian software development firm Haylem and its three affiliates. Its most recent victim earlier in Dec. 2024 has been Canada’s JRT Automatisation and India’s Aptus.
