MOST FASCINATING KNOWLEDGE WORLD!
We live in the most fascinating knowledge world, history has ever witnessed. If you have decided to still remain bereft of it, you can only be called unfortunate. The same thought process is applicable to learning / research institutions, business enterprises, communities, governments and nations alike. Whosoever decides not to be engaged in this unfolding story of the world, history would come back to bite him. The epitome of this fascinating world this year has been the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
No recognition or award has even fascinated me so much, as the contours of it would definitely define how we view the knowledge world, its worthwhile output and immense application. To say that AlphaFold got the 2024 Chemistry Nobel Prize would be a true description of what DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs and its ever improving research product, AlphaFold had set out to deliver. In simple language it is the AlphaFold AI’s capability to predict the protein structures, has been the winner.
This year’s prize thus celebrates the state of art AI computational tools. It has transformed biology and it is sitting at the cusp of totally transforming drug discovery. AI technologists, who are scientists in their own right, cracked the problem of biology and got a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. To top it all, DeepMind is a part of Google and so is Isomorphic Labs, so it is a commercial entity too. All barriers of knowledge; of academic research, of commercial application, of productising, of collaboration and business model have all been broken.
What it has celebrated in our interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary existence as we move forward with Artificial Intelligence at its core, or so it seems. “For the first time – and probably not the last- a scientific breakthrough enabled by AI has been recognized with a Nobel Prize.” AlphaFold has brought to the world experiments that were not imaginable a decade ago. AlphaFold is already in use and has started delivering results, it is nothing short of a major revolution. Demis Hassabis, founder of DeepMind and who has been heading the AI world from the front since 2010 and creator of AlphaFold said on 9th of Oct 2024, the day Nobel Prize was announced, “I hope when we look back a AlphaFold, it will be the first proof of AI’s incredible potential to accelerate scientific discovery”.
