THE OUTAGE!
The world comes to a standstill to experience the outage. The Microsoft Outage, created by CrowdStike, two global leaders, criss-crossing countries and continents, making the world realise the weaknesses of nation states. They were in no position to make any difference. From an all paternalistic, all dominating and perversely powerful democratic nation states today stood as rank outsiders watching the normal life being thrown out of gear. They could do nothing about it. They don’t have the wherewithal to do anything about it; emergency response, crisis team, war room; nothing. The most powerful to a simple air traveller could just watch everything unfolding passively on the TV.
The governments are left to play the democratic politics game and handle the daily chores of maintenance of men and material and deal with legality of something or otherwise. The infiltration in the life of every individual on the face of this earth by IT behemoths is full and complete. Nothing can run without them. We are all on the cloud. Today Azure made the difference. Few of these companies together can declare themselves as the third biggest economy way beyond what India is proclaiming to reach. In all likelihood one of these companies Microsoft included could just break the glass ceiling of $4 trillion by the end of this year itself.
How many of the countries can even elicit any information out of Microsoft and I don’t think many would even try to. They seem to have accepted that reality a long time back.. The news of resolution from CrowdStrike was what the world was eagerly waiting for, and not anything from any government. The Microsoft CrowdStrike Outage is a short span phenomenon, the IT behemoths have put governments across the globe on a permanent outage. That has been on for quite sometime now. When the critical sectors which you govern do not look up to you in the times of crisis, then there is certainly some major issue? Nobody can see the issues. The world is heading towards total control by a few IT behemoths.
The companies which land the world in such crisis situations also don’t look up to the government for any help and support. Anyway, the governments can provide anything to alleviate the crisis situation. No Essential Services Act can be invoked. No company can even be taken to task, as there are no laws which regulate them in different nation states. There is no penalty for disrupting the world, the sum total of nations. Today’s act did not contravene laws of any country? On the contrary, we have decided to be at their mercy; governments, companies and people alike. There cannot be any bigger degradation of governance. Unlike cyber attack, here there is nothing mandated to be reported, seemingly no regular governmental intervention too.
