WHAT A STATE OF AFFAIRS… THE RG KAR IMBROGLIO
What a state? And what is the state of affairs? What is the use of a thumping majority? Does nothing impact the bureaucracy and the political executive? Does democracy mean total subservience of the people; not only the poor and the hapless, but also the best of professionals and even the people who save the lives of the ruling class itself? Are resident doctors third class citizens to keep languishing in the sun, dust, filth and rain, while the powers that be keep calling the shots in the background, shamelessly. Is it not in the fitness of things that protest sites should be provided with some amenities.
Do we treat any and every type of protest as enemies of the state? What about the behaviour of the government? All governments profess and practice lip service of public service to a level of a shrill war cry, as if they will die, if they are not allowed to perform public service. But see the reality, even live telecast becomes an issue. An issue which has to again go in favour of the state government and the esteemed leader. How minutes of the meeting would be recorded, recording of transcripts / signature et al. The Supreme Court proceedings of the same case made available live, how can the state government object to it.
If the government has lost total trust of this group, which it has, in the wake of a gravest crime, what is left of governance anyway? The one of its kind protest, might be the strongest in post-independent India, has meant nothing to them. They are operating with the mental frame of life as usual. They were rattled in the beginning and now they feel they can manage it. What has the government conceded so far? Few transfers. But for some psychological advantage, how does it help matters anyway. None of them have been suspended or punished and there is no likelihood of that happening too. For sure there would be no adverse entry in their performance appraisal too.
What is the responsibility of the state is being put at the doorstep of the agitating doctors. Numbers of patients’ deaths are being ascribed to them, with no empirical study. People who have brought the situation to such a pathetic stage have no responsibility or accountability. The super independent SHO, who has been arrested by the CBI, could do whatever he did, without the support of the seniors and the powers that be. There is criminal breach of trust top to bottom. The criminal breach of trust seems to have been inbuilt into the system there. Such strong and powerful leaders are not able to provide security to the 26 medical college campuses in the most trying of times, even after 40 days of the incident. The lingering feeling is that people don’t matter to the governments, they are fully dispensable, as long as they can control the levers to make the caucus thrive.
INDIA IS A LAND OF PEACETIME GOVERNMENTS, TALL CLAIMS AND FULLEST EXPLOITATION OF POWER FOR THEIR ADVANTAGE.
