CAN YOU LEARN AT THE JOB?
Learning on the job we keep talking even after strict academic regimen & internship. If taken in the right earnest it helps improve your competencies. Competencies for a job should match the requirements, whatever might the method of entry. This learning cannot happen on the job. You can’t learn engineering after landing in an engineering job. What would be the struggle, if you don’t know the domain & the job you are to perform.
These are basically high end generic jobs is lots of areas, education, governance & the like with no specific qualifications. It can self created or is a part of a bigger business or administrative mechanism. A person as the head of an Education Society tasked with creating academic institutions & its functioning. Switching roles can happen for one or two as an exception, does not happen for all. Having no idea of education & trying to learn on the job can be messy.
While physical infrastructure might give a feeling that you are doing fine, the actual fate would be taking you to the contrary. Institution building can be a tough game. Once in while you can spot talent who can deliver, it does happen every time & all across. The skills comes both out of education, training & experience, if you lack all these, how do you deliver?
Human failings are a part of human DNA & thus your lack of knowledge in all likelihood, will get exploited. You can be made to believe that everything is hunky dory, till the time it finally gets busted. Then because of lack of experience & expertise you are not a position to recover, respond & take correctional steps.
In the governance mechanism, Trump Presidency is turning out to be an ideal example of this failing. You cannot learn Presidency & governance on the job. Last 15 months has thus become a roller coaster ride for both Trump, Presidency & the nation. The fallout can continue for years. Learning on the job & being their with clarity & competence can be the difference between Trump and Putin.
LEARNING EVEN THE BASICS OF THE JOB, ON THE JOB, IS A FALLACY.
