FRANCHISED AND DISEMPOWERED!
If you have never heard or read of ‘franchised and disempowered’ as the true description of the de facto Indian democracy, then for sure you have missed the woods for the trees. While there can innumerable instances, decisions, processes, enforcements et al. that can cited in the litany of woes, last one week gone through, in the life of the citizens of Bangalore can be an apt example of the present state, where we are coming from and where we are heading in this great democratic journey of namesake franchise. Does franchise not guarantee us anything, or just we should feel happy celebrating the festival of democracy like buffoons!
How many of the Bangaloreans did not feel totally disempowered facing the perils of the man made deluge? How many times in the last few years have not been shamed into subhuman living? Might be it has become the order of the day, that our sensibilities against being rode roughshod has been numbed. The plight of the fundamental rights remains what it is, the powers that be added fundamental duties for the Indian citizen by 42nd Amendment to the Indian constitution. What can be called the de facto fundamental duty, outside the word and spirit of the constitution, is to disempower the citizenry till they are stripped of even notional power.
Every election the political parties take approval, called democratic mandate, for whatever they have done and what they intend to do. They claim there is no need for any other legal or other validation, the court of the people being the final arbiter. Unfortunately, elections are not courts of law, passing judgements based on the facts of the case. It is an exercise to form both the legislature and the political executive in a democracy. They are supposed to take care of the rest. This legal position has been turned upside down by the prevalent perverse logic that is suitable to all democratic parasites.
What impact has it on people? They have been disempowered in a very democratic manner. What has it done to the political ruling class? It has made them totally unaccountable. Both these processes work hand in hand to the ultimate peril of the masses. Nobody is even in a position to pressurise to even get the democratic due, which should come to them in a mechanical manner. Crores and crores have been transformed from citizens to beneficiaries by providing government alms by the democratic rulers. The professional classes have got so disenchanted that they keep away, adding to the power of the political elite. The civil society which should have been the guiding force, has been brought to the periphery.
THE SOVEREIGN – PEOPLE OF INDIA HAVE BEEN DISEMPOWERED IN A SURREPTITIOUS MANNER.
