SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS THROUGH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION 4.0
Success in collaboration is the future of mankind. Goals and its metrics have for long been there in our developmental textbooks but the progress has been tardy. The visible change does not seem to be in the vicinity. Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, of the United Nations is one such grandiose agenda waiting on the wings. It is a set of 17 global goals set by UN General Assembly in 2015 for the year 2030. It is the Global Agenda 2030. The goals range from No Poverty to Sustainable Cities and Communities to Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions and Partnerships for the Goals. Each goal has targets measurable by prescribed indicators.
Not that these goals are new or there is a drastic change in methodology to make it happen. The success or otherwise of it would depend on the 17th SDG – Partnerships for achieving these goals and using the emerging technologies unleashed by the Industrial Revolution 4.0. This is the age of Partnerships 2.0 where from the global level to the most micro, involving myriad government bodies, business enterprises and NGOs, from the most simple to the most complex, technologically challenging to socially intensive partnerships with clear measurable deliverables both on the financial and the physical side can be executed successfully at the dynamic, real time level.
The overarching ecosystem necessarily has to be that of IR 4.0. The 17 SDGs will have an interplay with the technologies of the IR 4.0 for achieving the goals on a Technological Blueprint for SDGs. IR 4.0 is marked by emerging technology breakthroughs in number of fields including robotics, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, biotechnology, internet of things, fifth generation wireless technologies (5G), addictive manufacturing/3D printing and fully autonomous vehicles.
These are disruptive technologies and world is already enmeshed in it. SDGs cannot have an existence devoid it, harnessing it would lead to both disruptive and sustainable success. Without factoring in technology in development in the most visionary manner, a world wide humungous change cannot happen. Marriage of SDGs and IR4.0 is the formula of its success.
