HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 2017

With the clarity of Human Rights still to resonate with the exploited & the stakeholders alike, the United Nations will kick off today in Paris, a year-long campaign to honour the foundational human rights document, next year marking its 70th anniversary. Today is the Human Rights Day, being celebrated from 1948 with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the 10th of Dec, 1948. It got created after years of deliberations in the aftermath of innumerable inhuman episodes during the 2nd World War & the preceding decades.

This document happens to the most important document in our living memory, human rights being one of three cornerstones of the UN. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights happens to be the world’s most translated document. It has also found its way into host of constitutions, covenants, treaties, large number of other enactments and host of structures & mechanisms in furtherance of the cause of human rights.

With the memory of 2nd World War receding from human memory, human rights has become more of a war of attrition between human rights organisations & NGOs on the one side & national governments on the other. Official Human Rights Commissions are trying to make their impact felt with limited success. Being the creation of the govt. the over expansive powers needed for this task is missing. Human rights cannot become the order of the day only by organisations named above, it can be made a limited reality also, only by the crusading zeal of governments, more so at the grass root level &businesses of different types from MNCs to the petty trader.

Advocacy & awareness is done in a mechanical manner, the missionary zeal missing and so does the sustainability. It has not become part of our DNA.Seeing everyone as a human being has to brought forth comprehensively through a well coordinated inter-agency multi-pronged approach.

FROM THE INTANGIBLES TO TANGIBLE IT’s STILL A LONG & ARDUOUS JOURNEY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS.
