JOB NOT WORK, THE INDIAN STORY

We talk about jobs & not the work that needs to happen in this country. Job market is all what is talked about in today’s business circles. A good job market reflects robustness. But no one really knows, the exact work to be done. Job is all we aspire for & job is only what we get. Nothing more. Job is ”a paid position of regular employment.” The work is not of primary concern, employment is. The workability is in question. The exact objective connection of a job with the quantum of salary, is yet to be established.

We don’t get into a vocation, profession, specialisation or a long term career, for fulfilling a purpose in life. It’s only for salary. Then where is the connect. Work is an ”activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a result.” In reality, achieving success in couple of professional works assigned to you, can establish you not only in your company but across the whole sector.

If achieving results is the consideration, then strict adherence to time & effort cannot happen. Where the results actually happen, this formula completely fails. Inventions & discoveries have not happened in this manner nor have companies been created this way. Is work fully known? Are employees wedded to it? Years in the job & salary parity is the formula on which large number of businesses / industries operate, is getting unstuck.

Unattached to their work & vocation, the war of attrition starts. Actually, nobody gains. The same bunch of supposedly professional guys start circulating in the market. The expertise creation does not happen. Can software products be developed in this environment?Lifetime is less, to create an enduring business; its the result of large number of professionals wedded to the vision / philosophy of the company, its value, its work ethic and finally work which is delivered consistently over a period of time. Work & only work shall prevail. Unknown work, whatever may be the revenue generation, cannot sustain.
