META’S PUSH: IS IT CLOSING THE GAP?

Meta has been racing to build top-tier AI. After its Muse Spark model launched in April and got mixed reviews, the company now says a newer model called Watermelon is training and already matches OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 in some tests. Meta is also promising big coding and “agent” improvements soon.

Why the change now? Meta created a SuperIntelligence Lab and hired aggressively, bringing in top AI talent. That gave the company the people and cash to try bigger experiments — Watermelon reportedly uses about ten times the compute of Muse Spark — which helps close the gap with rivals.

Where does Meta stand compared with others? The AI frontier keeps moving: new models like Mythos and Fable, plus OpenAI’s 5.6-series, are advancing quickly. Meta looks more competitive than it did in April, but it still faces very strong contenders and must prove real-world performance, safety, and reliability before being seen as a clear leader.

Will Meta become a major player? Its huge investment and new lab make it a serious contender, but the final verdict will depend on product quality, timing, and how well Meta handles risks. The coming months of model releases and independent benchmarks will decide whether Meta can convert spend and talent into lasting leadership.

FOR NOW, META IS BACK IN THE RACE — BUT THE FINISH LINE IS STILL AHEAD.
