Neuralink is a company started by Elon Musk that builds tiny computer chips to connect the brain to machines. Surgeons implant a small device with many electrodes into the part of the brain that controls movement. The implant listens to neurons firing when a person thinks about moving their limbs.
The device records those brain signals and sends them to a computer that learns what each pattern of activity means. Software translates the patterns into commands — for example, moving a cursor on a screen. That cursor output is then linked to external hardware, like a powered wheelchair, so a thought to move forward becomes an actual push of the chair.
In recent clinical tests, people with paralysis used the implant to steer, reverse, and stop a wheelchair only by thinking, and some users reported it felt natural within minutes. The experiments use over 1,000 tiny electrodes and decoding algorithms to convert thoughts into reliable control signals, showing clear practical potential for restoring independence.
Neuralink still faces medical, regulatory, and ethical hurdles: brain surgery risks, long-term safety of implants, rigorous clinical approvals, and questions about cost and accessibility. Non-surgical rivals aim to avoid those risks, so widespread commercial use depends on proving clear long-term benefits and getting regulators’ green light — a multi-year path, not immediate.
