Some giant computers may soon stop sitting on land and start floating above it. Elon Musk’s SpaceX and chip giant Nvidia have joined hands to build data centers in space. The first one, called Starmind, is expected to launch by the end of 2027.
Why space at all? Because AI is very hungry. Every answer an AI gives you needs a computer farm that drinks huge amounts of electricity and water. On the ground, neighbours are angry — bills are rising, water is running low, and the machines never stop humming. Musk wants to put the farms where there are no neighbours at all.
Is this real or just a dream? Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, called the idea ridiculous. Going to space is costly, and if a chip breaks up there, who will fix it? But Musk says his space computer is simpler, lighter and cheaper, and big names like Nvidia are betting real money on it. Today it still costs more than four times as much as building on the ground — but Musk believes that maths will soon flip.
If this works, the payoff is big. One rack is like a giant computer with 72 chips, each many times more powerful than older ones. In space there is endless sunlight, free cooling, and no land or water bills — a chance for AI to keep growing without squeezing Earth’s power grid.
