UNITED NATIONS – BLOCKCHAIN THE WAY FORWARD!
Deciding on the technology which would deliver the organisational goals in the most appropriate manner, easy to audit and difficult to pilfer has been the most difficult challenge of organisations; business and otherwise. Though there are no humongous used cases at the global level for Blockchain technology, it is turning out to the the natural choice given its features; being distributed, encrypted, blocks being created only if majority agree and it being immutable. The latest to come out in total favour of embracing Blockchain is United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
According to a Dec.28 Forbes report the UN Secretary General believes that Blockchain should be one of the technologies used by the UN. He feels that this would help them to deliver then on their mandate better. It would also accelerate the achievement Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, the 17 goals which would ameliorate mankind by 2030. In July last year, he created a “High Level Panel on Digital Cooperation,” which has the distinction of putting blockchain technology explicitly on the agenda.
So the the current declaration in not a flash in the pan, serious thinking, research and deliberations have gone behind it. It is believed that the trust in the national institutions, amongst different states and also in the rules based international order has gone down and that only technological intervention can set right things. He is of the opinion that blockchain in particular can help mitigate this ensuing trust crisis. Blockchain is also called the Trust Machine by technical experts.
Cryptocurrencies being used for trafficking in people is a reality. On the positive side we have blockchain based financial services to stop exploitation of migrant workers which started in Hongkong this month. UN is also trying to find out blockchain solutions for sustainable urban development in Afghanistan. UN expert feels that Blockchain could bring tremendous benefits across aviation systems globally.
