BINANCE HIT BY WORLD’S BIGGEST CRYPTO HEIST

Hackers have stolen about $6.3 billion from Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, in what analysts call the biggest crypto theft ever recorded. The funds were moved from Binance-controlled wallets across 10 blockchains, with most transfers happening in roughly 20 minutes. Blockchain investigators TRM Labs and Chainalysis say the attack shows the fingerprints of TraderTraitor, an elite North Korean hacking unit.

The attack reportedly began with a compromised engineer’s laptop. That device allegedly gave hackers access to an internal service container, allowing them to submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions from Binance’s wallets. Binance says there is no evidence that users’ private wallet keys were leaked, meaning this appears to be an exchange-level security failure rather than customers losing control of their own wallets.

Binance has temporarily suspended withdrawals and deposits, while working with blockchain partners and stablecoin issuers to freeze stolen assets. Around $3 billion has reportedly been immobilized, though freezing does not guarantee recovery. The exchange says it will cover customer losses through emergency reserves and company funds, and expects normal withdrawals to resume within about 48 hours.

This is not simply a random cybercrime: North Korea has long used crypto theft to raise money under international sanctions, and investigators link TraderTraitor to the earlier $1.5 billion Bybit theft. However, “North Korea can hack anything at will” is an overstatement—the Binance breach shows highly capable, state-linked attackers exploiting a specific weak point, not unlimited power over all systems. If the stolen funds are not recovered, ordinary customers may be made whole by Binance, but the wider danger is that the money could support sanctioned weapons programmes.
