LARGEST CROATIAN HOSPITAL HACKED

If you study the nature of cyber attacks of late, it would not take long to discern that critical infrastructure would continue to be the favourite target of the hackers. For sure healthcare institutions remain a part of them, given the fancy for it among the hackers. Hospitals do not bring empathy in the hearts of these criminals. Data and money and both are the targets and any critical institution which can deliver it for them is fine. The other trend is that hacking has become another tool of war.

Given this context we see the largest Croatian hospital facing a cyber attack slightly more than a month back. Croatian television reported the attack on the University Hospital Centre Zagreb (KBC Zagreb). The hospital was forced to shut down as the information systems were down. They confirmed that they would start going online in parts once they are sure that it is safe to do so. The hospital later claimed that all services were working but the processing of the patients was slower than usual.

The hospital’s emergency service and medical laboratories were functioning normally as per their official’s communication. The slowdown was due to the impossibility to print our medical records and had to be written manually. The hospital claimed that the patients’ information was not leaked / exfiltrated as a part of their preliminary finding. Getting slightly deeper into the tech part it is yet unknown whether the cyber attack involved the deployment of malware or was it connected to a DDOS attack on the websites of several Croatian government and financial institutions.

The DDOS attack has been claimed by the pro-Russian NoName057(16) hacker group. At times both these attacks are meant for diversion from the main goal of data theft. Given the geopolitical situation it was also possible that the cyber attack could be a part of Russian sabotage operations. The nature of the attack has not been officially confirmed. LockBit has claimed this hospital as its victim. The RaaS group has claimed to have exfiltrated large amounts of hospital data but has not displayed any of it as a sample on any of the dark web sites. Hope the investigation unravels the modus operandi and the digital booty of this hack.

HOSPITAL HACKS ARE A WORRYING TREND WITH NO SOLUTION IN SIGHT.
