THE PONTIFICATION OF INDIA
Free advice and the capability to talk endlessly on topics / issues we are unaware is in the Indian DNA; the progress to similar talk shows, debates by way of sermonising came naturally to us, with the proliferation of 24/7 news channels. Everybody become an expert. To pontificate is the latest fad and sooner than later the pontification of the country would be completed.
The anchors / moderators role got transformed into a dictatorial role presiding over the talk shows in a manner unimaginable even a few years back. They are the latest breed of angels of modern India, the country has to contend with. The spokespersons inability to put a spoke in the ongoing debate has added a new dimension to the ongoing raging fire of electronic debating in the country.
The debating format we learnt in schools and colleges went in for sea on the electronic medium, the strength of debater to substantiate his point of view and express it cogently in the right language with the appropriate flow and voice modulation in the stipulated time has gone out of circulation. Time is unlimited; unfamiliarity with the language itself is not a negative trait, leave aside the other mandatory credentials of debating.
The rabble rousing moderators have created entertainment out of a serious intellectual activity of our democratic existence. The audience being solely fed on this format content and format end up sitting in front of the idiot box with coke and snacks for their bout of free fun and frolic. Gone are the days when attending a debate itself was a matter of prestige. Being a debater in famed debates of Delhi University could make you an instant hero.
A parallel narrative ought to emerge as a viable alternative in our schools and colleges to keep this great art alive and challenge the commercial electronic format. Intellect with ideas can and should be the only core debating value.
THE QUALITY OF DEBATES DECIDE THE NARRATIVE OF A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY.
