CYBER SECURITY- LIP SERVICE CONTINUES
With the heat of the WannaCry seemingly dying, the impact of the attack in terms of bringing forth permanent changes in the Cyber Security mindset & developing enhanced capabilities aligned to the changing requirements does not seem to have seen a sea change. This has been the story so vividly experienced in the last few years. Sony is a case in point. On the hackers side groups like Lazarus have been nailing this point again & again to the extent some have called it as ISIS of the Cyber World.
Lip service & consequent withdrawal to status quo ante is certainly is not the way forward. With technology becoming more & more complex by the passing day & standards not in place, its a field day for one & all. What is not measured is not done is the adage. Organisations not following this well established mode of functioning have become experts in providing selective information to the public to ease their fear psychosis. This can be termed as the epitome of lip service.
Critical infrastructure organisations also face a similar uphill task. The old & outmoded system of outsourcing to IT vendors is having a toll on the health of the organisations. Not being aware of the nitty gritty of the back end IT infrastructure & processes will not only land the organisations in trouble, it does not augur well for the nation.
The ownership, responsibility & accountability of the top management inclusive of the CEO will provide the needed impetus. This would force things happening down the line with the consequent accountability & spread of a Cyber aware culture in the organisation. Security as is being reiterated over and over again should become a design element. Cyber Risk should find a place in the valuation of the businesses as it is turning out to be the most critical element of its existence. It is difficult to get out of the present morass without attending to it.
