DECISION MAKING
Decisions have decided the fate of individuals, societies, nations and business enterprises. Decisions not taken have also contributed in an equal measure. Decisions become iconic by its impact. With the complexities of the world increasing and percolating till the individual level, the inbuilt heavy dose of uncertainty in today’s living, decision making has become a very difficult mandated task to performed by one and all.
The simplistic matrix of having couple of options, getting facts & figures in favour or otherwise, one round of rational analysis and the decision is taken. The options are not as crystal clear as it used to be earlier. Logical decision making, important part of science based professions, cannot he replicated in other spheres.
With ambiguities ruling the roost in today’s world, experts tend to use intuition rather than the structured process in the process of decision making. Stakeholders who have no stakes in the results should not be the final decision makers. Procrastination can lead to delays impacting the very purpose of the decision negatively. It is sometimes termed as Analysis Paralysis, which is the state of over analysing a situation, leading to no decision at all. No decision is also a decision is the feeling few decision makers share.
Confidence plays a pivotal role emanating out of expertise, experience and knowledge. Past decisions, their failure and successes become the key deterministic principles. Will power, grit, determination, being self driven and effort, decide the success of the decision, as the adage goes, no decisions are inherently right or wrong. Execution is the key. Failed decisions are quite literally failed executions.
BREXIT type decision making marks another watershed in the decision making process.
