INDIA UNDER WRAPS – NOTHING GETS REPORTED!
Whatever might be the literature of yore written and passed down over the generations and centuries, the fact of the matter is that we don’t believe in documentation. We don’t document to prove to disprove something. It is done by the gift of the gab, social positioning, on faith, emotion and above all trust. Credibility need not be built on objective delivery over and over again, but can be created primarily on perception. In yesteryears, it had some connection with the ground realities and grind, but in today’s world it hangs by a nebulous cord. Not only that it can be created it can be sustained till the time it meets a major mishap.
More often than not, the game getting unstuck was not happening, till around a decade back. The invention of social media and the way it sucked the world in itself, has been the gamechanger. India has always been under wraps, the government on its own never brought anything devastating to the table. If it came up by fluke, the government did its level best to keep it at the minimal. When it went out of hand, the repercussions had to be managed. The media at least till a decade a two back, did some amount of reporting, nonetheless very little investigative journalism. From there they have moved to peddling stories of their choice, on the electronic media.
The beginning of the dedicated 24/7 news channels was also the beginning of the nemesis of news in this country. By extension it hastened the death of journalism. The print media with whatever following it has runs on ads of atta to amazon prime to elections and welcome and thank you ads. Come to think of it, if all that happens day in and day out could be reported threadbare in the public domain, it could transform India into a different country. Keeping under wraps whatever should go to the public domain has become our DNA. Only created good stuff is released in a calibrated manner to get the maximum fake positive results.
Whenever there is killing then we remember of mafias; sand to drugs to what not! How many of these are being regularly reported upon? If any of the things that happen on a regular basis is spoken out, by some odd person, for reasons best known to him, it becomes breaking news. What about the Think Tanks NGOs and civil society who have unfettered access to both the ordinary, complex and crooked way of our existence and exploitation? Between all elected representatives, all good, bad and ugly happening in this country, can come to light. Everything happening in Manipur has been known to some people or more people; government or otherwise, intelligence inclusive, still it could remain under wraps. Endless incidents all still under wraps. What a fate? A super investigative agency to find out, what could be reported on a day to day basis. What has been media doing all this while. We as a country don’t want to face our own issues, then who will do it for us.
