ROBOTS / ROBOTICS

ROBOTS / ROBOTICS

As per Japanese philosophy everything has a soul and so does robots.  They feel robots would work hand in hand with the human counterparts. It is not treated as just another inanimate object as we make it out to be. Unfortunately,  the western world thinks differently and it treats it as a competitor to human beings and has created a scare that the consequent automation  would wipe out vast majority of human beings from their regular jobs.

Robotics as a branch of engineering & science is now at the cutting edge of mechanical, electrical, electronics & computer science. The design, construction, operation & use of robots in  controlled environments and specific purposes has been there for long.  Highest end computer systems, sensory feedback and out of world humungous information processing, has added a new dimension.  Computer Vision coupled with natural language processing with big data handling to artificial intelligence capabilities are pitching these robots at an adversarial position to human beings.

The word robot appears as a fictional humanoid in a 1920 play R.U.R scripted by Karel Capek. Robots have found their way by replacing human beings in performing repetitive and dangerous tasks. Robots can be autonomous or semi-autonomous, humanoids inclusive as in Honda’s ASIMO to industrial robots to even microscopic nano robots.  The issue gains critical importance with Autonomous Things expected to proliferate in the next decade.

These robots would use artificial intelligence to  interact with their environment on their own without any control source.  They can own their own respond to objects & problems they come across using their pre-existing programming.  They would also learn through their own experience and keep maturing.  Cognition comes into play. Watson is doing wonders. Better machines would get created in future. This is a challenge which mankind faces.  Is oversight essential in what we can broadly call as the future of artificial intelligence?

IT IS A MAN ROBOT WORLD AHEAD. WHO WOULD LEAD?
